15 Ways to Help You Relax

Ahh relaxation; it seems like a distant memory, right? With our busy lives, sometimes we can get caught up in work, family and the long list of responsibilities we pack in our day. We often don’t have time to take care of ourselves let alone fully unwind. We polled a handful of people and asked what specific things they like to do when they are feeling overwhelmed. If you’re in need of some inspiration on how to take a break from your routine, here are some ideas for achieving an ultimate state of relaxation.

  1. Browse the discount section of your favorite store. A guilty pleasure, the $1 section at Target. Not only can this little slice of heaven put you in a great mood, but it truly can lead you to some neat stuff.
  2. Melt into the couch with that book you’ve been eager to start. Whether it be sci-fi or a memoir, a good book has the power to transport you into a different world. Take some time to immerse yourself in a novel and escape from the hustle and bustle of your busy life.
  3. Find your Zen with a sun-salutation. Practicing yoga will not only improve your physical health but it’s also a very common form of relaxation. A low-intensity, stretch-based workout is meant to help you connect your mind and body, diminishing stress.
  4. Give your lawn a small spruce. Weeding, mowing, raking leaves, all surprisingly satisfying. Manicuring your lawn can make you feel both at ease and accomplished, the perfect approach for someone who is always on the go.
  5. Clear your mind with a few miles. Running and biking are two relaxation techniques that truly can put your mind at ease. The consistency of both these activities allows you to focus your thoughts and de-stress.
  6. Breathe in 2, 3, 4. Breathe out 2, 3, 4. Meditation is a common form of leisure. Connecting your mind, body and soul allows you to be more present in your everyday life.
  7. Color yourself calm. That’s right, crayons aren’t just for kids! Coloring can focus your thoughts on one simple task to help reduce stress. Coloring and other crafts also promote creativity and help you find a healthy outlet for self-expression.
  8. Dust off that old deck of cards. Before leaving the house in the morning, grab a deck of cards to play with your co-workers at lunch. A good game of Spite and Malice can help you recharge so you’re ready to take on the rest of your day.
  9. Master those scrumptious recipes you’ve been saving on Pinterest. Cooking and baking is another task that refocuses your attention and declutters your mind. Invite some friends over to enjoy some of the delicious dishes you’ve whipped up.
  10. Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses. No, seriously! Aromatherapy is an excellent way to put your mind at ease. Scents like lavender and eucalyptus unwind your body and send your mind into full relaxation mode. Try burning some candles or incense, or set up a diffuser with your favorite essential oils.
  11. Let the sounds of a storm wash your worries away. There’s something so calming about falling asleep to the sound of rain. Luckily, you don’t have to wait around for mother nature. There are plenty of music-streaming apps that allow you to listen to hours of rain, wind, and other sounds in nature.
  12. Find peace in your pet. The unconditional love of a pet can make your stress seem so distant. If you’re in need of a break, spend some time cuddling on the couch or playing tug-o-war with your pup.
  13. Indulge in that much needed massage. It’s okay to pamper yourself every so often! Find a massage therapist, and schedule that full body massage you’ve been wanting.
  14. Wipe, dust or mop up your worry. Believe it or not, some can find serenity in cleaning. Tackling a lingering mess can make you feel accomplished and focus your mind on something simple, yet productive. This way, you’re taking away the anxiety of the mess and decluttering your mind.
  15. Take advantage of the seventh-inning stretch. Switch on the game and forget all the worries of your week. Find relaxation in your favorite sports team.
