Snack Ideas for Those with Diabetes

carrots and hummusWith diabetes, snacks can be vital to maintaining proper blood sugar levels. For anyone who is taking glucose-lowering diabetes medications or insulin, they also may use snacks to keep blood sugar levels close to normal to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Today we’ve come up with a list of snacks that you can use to help decrease your chances of low blood sugar.

Snacks containing less than five grams of carbohydrates (helpful when you are looking for a low-carbohydrate choice):

  • 1 hard-boiled egg
  • 1 stick string cheese
  • ½ c. sugar-free Jello
  • ½ c. sugar-free pudding
  • 6 T Newman’s salsa with cut up peppers, broccoli, celery
  • 15 Goldfish crackers
  • 3 oz. sliced turkey wrapped in a lettuce leaf

Snacks containing about 15 grams of carbohydrates:

  • 3 graham crackers with 1 T peanut butter
  • 1 c. carrots or cucumbers with ¼ c. hummus
  • 2 rice cakes with 1 T peanut butter
  • 2 plums
  • ½ c. sugar free ice cream
  • ½ c.oatmeal with ¼ cup of chopped nuts
  • ¼ c. low fat cottage cheese with ½ cup peaches, lite and drained
  • 3 Lindt chocolates
